Support and training
Helping you to be the best foster carer you can be

Support and training

You are professionals at what you do, so we care about investing in your development.

Because we are an independent fostering agency, we can offer an extra level of support. Our team are there to support your entire family in a way that works for you.

There will always be someone from our team at the other end of the phone for any advice you need – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

At monthly support groups you can meet other foster carers and share your experiences. You can also access an extended support network of specialists in education, psychology and therapy if the young person in your care would benefit from additional help.

They’re always there on the end of the phone, 24 hours day, bank holidays and Christmas too.

Therapeutic support for foster carers

Our foster carers can work with a trained psychotherapist to learn tools and strategies for therapeutic parenting. This gives our foster carers a better understanding of the reasons behind young people’s behaviour so they can provide individualised care.

You can work with our psychotherapists on a one-to-one basis or as part of a group session, and can take advantage of their fostering training to develop your skills.

What training is available?

Training doesn’t end once you’ve been approved to foster – we run courses throughout the year that you can attend in your local office:

Skills to Foster

An introductory training course to get you ready for fostering. This can be held virtually or in-person and will be with other people who are becoming foster carers for the first time.

Social pedagogy

Specialist training about St Christopher’s approach to caring for children and young people. You will learn about building relationships with young people, growing their self-confidence and supporting them to achieve their goals.

Therapeutic fostering

This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to care for children with trauma.

Parent and child fostering

This type of fostering is when both the child and their parent move in with you. Your role is to support the parent to learn how to take care of their child and to support the development of their bond.

Radicalisation prevention

You will learn how to spot the signs of radicalisation, what you can do to counteract it, and which agencies can provide support.

…and many more courses.
